The Hiram Chittenden Locks, Gas Works Park and Houseboats

Explore the busiest locks in the US, Seattle’s most unique park and the houseboat communities along Lake Union!

Let’s explore the Hiram Chittenden Locks (AKA Ballard Locks), a transformative component of our maritime industry and history and watch boats “lock through”. We will see harbor seals frolicking and smolts (baby salmon) travel through the locks towards the ocean, and adults returning to navigate the fish ladder on their way home to fresh water to spawn. We may spot Great Blue Herons and eagles! Then we’re off to Gas Works Park for stunning views of the city, boats and kayaks in Lake Union and sea planes taking off and landing. Gas Works is unique for its historical preservation of the only coal gasification plant structures left in the US. This is the heart of Seattle, where we celebrate Independence Day with fabulous fireworks and a big party! On the return trip we will peak into the houseboat communities along Lake Union, a uniquely Seattle experience.

NOTE: This tour is on foot and in my SUV, this is NOT a boat tour 🙂

A very special thank you to Jeff Chin for the amazing photo of the Herons!
